Here you will find not only the best quality rums such as Havana Club, Santiago de Cuba or Caney, also you will taste spectacular cocktails derived from this. Today we are going to be talking about one of the most special ones: “La Canchánchara”.
Origin.
Canchanchara is a traditional Cuban cocktail that originated in the late 19th century. It was created at the central part of the island, specifically in Trinidad. At the end of this post, you will find the recipe but basically it is made with rum, honey, lime juice, and water. The drink is believed to have been created by Cuban revolutionaries (Mambises) during the Ten Years' War (1868-1878) against Spanish colonial rule. Due to the sensation of freshness that is felt when consuming it, this cocktail quickly spread to the entire island full of hot temperatures, becoming one of the most popular in the country.
Its name.
The name "canchánchara" is not clear for the researchers and scientists interested on this topic but it is thought to come from the Spanish word "chanchanarra," which refers to a type of roasted pig dish. Another suggestion is that some believe the name may also be derived from the Taíno indigenous language and refer to a type of fruit or plant. For Cubans canchanchara is already part of the national language and every single Cuban will know what it means.
Serving.
This drink is usually served using traditional clay cups calles "Carolinas" instead of the regular glasses. This is because of its capacity to keep temperatures for a long time. “La Canchánchara” is served cold and icy so the intention is that to keep like that so you can have a great drink time combined with a pleasant chat.
Recipe.
The basic recipe for canchanchara is:
- 2 oz white rum
- 1 oz lime juice
- 1 oz honey
- 2 oz water
- Lime wedge for garnish.
The ingredients are combined and stirred or shaken with ice, then strained into the traditional carolina cup. Some variations may include the addition of mint or other herbs.
Canchanchara has become an iconic part of Cuban culture and is considered one of the country's national drinks, alongside the mojito and the Cuba libre. It remains popular both in Cuba and among Cuban diaspora communities around the world.
